This type of sculpture is often called a “totem”. Because totem traditionally refers to some spiritual traditions and sculptures that are in the same form, but have a different intention,
I prefer the word “stack” and will use it in this description.
This hand formed, carved, glazed and arranged stack is a collection of individual sculptures stacked on a vertical field with a metal base and core.
The ceramic pieces are fired to Cone 5/6 and can be installed outside in a garden as the clay is vitrified and will resist most weather. (See installation information below.)
I designed the stack as a celebration of bees and they're wonderful contribution to our life and living. The pollinator flowers on each of the globes are also great contributors to human well-being and health.
The base is an Echinacea flower whose common names include purple coneflower, coneflower, and American cone flower. Echinacea is an herbal medicine that has been used for centuries to treat colds, coughs, bronchitis, upper respiratory infections, and some inflammatory conditions.
The yellow Sunflower is a strong flower that can withstand harsh conditions. As well as being a wonderful pollinator in our area it has medicinal uses such as curing malaria fever, healing spider bites, and as a tea healing bronchial coughs. It has also been used a and a very effective wound dressing.
The spectacular red and yellow Blanket flower is also a local pollinator. This flower has been used for medicinal purposes by indigenous people in Western North America for healing upset stomach and intestines, skin disorders, and for reproductive support of new mothers.
The lovely periwinkle triangular Spiderwort is used for a poultice to treat cancer, it's tea is used for treating stomach aches and relieving insect bite pain and itching.
As well as helping the bees pollinate and make honey these plants are very useful to humans directly for healing. Pollinators are responsible for one out of every three bites of food people eat.
The stack can be installed inside your home, on a porch, or stand in your garden. Installation is separate from the cost of the sculpture as it will be depended on where and how the piece needs to be installed for your pleasure!
Celebrating our pollinators and bees in this permanent joyful stack will enhance your garden with perpetual blooms (it’s a perennial!) and be a great conversation starter for your guests!
